Abernathy/Abernethy DNA Project

Objective: to establish relationships of families of Abernethy/Abernathy/Bernethy (and all variations) using Y-DNA analysis in conjunction with traditional genealogy research methods.

Neither paper pedigree trails nor DNA results by themselves are sufficient, but must be combined for maximum understanding of our ancestry. DNA test kits suitable for this study may be ordered from DNA Heritage, Ancestry DNA, Family Tree DNA, or from any other commercial service that offers Y-DNA tests for genealogy purposes. The collection process is as simple and non-invasive as brushing your teeth. Please check out the price comparison link to decide which best fits your budget. Additional information (census, wills, deeds, etc) to assist in traditional research methods is also available on this website. In order to learn more about DNA Testing, we urge you to check out the Tutorial links before asking us questions.

A minimum test to establish probable relationship between two individuals or lineages would be 24 or more markers, but low end tests with a minimum of 12 markers typically suffice to eliminate a relationship between two individuals of the same surname, and upgrades are generally available. Prices vary depending on where you order your kit, and as in so many things, you get what you pay for. The least expensive test kit may not be what you will ultimately need, and you may have to upgrade or re-test. For efficiency and cost considerations, we do not recommend that you start with an inexpensive low end test (ie, less than 20 markers) since your surname is known and you should have a reasonable paper trail. Under those circumstances, a more comprehensive test, despite the higher initial cost, is recommended. If, however, you are adopted or know almost nothing of your family history, a 12 marker may suffice to get you started, and we may be able to assist you with the paper trail.(…MORE on sourc site)

A good place for direct male Abernethy/Abernathy descendants to get started – with or without a ‘paper trail’.
