Abernathy DNA Questions?

If you have questions of how you are related to other folks with the ABERNATHY/ABERNETHY surname, this website may help you sort out very complex kinship questions.

In recent years DNA research has helped to answer many long-lasting questions of how various Abernathy family lines are, or are NOT related.

To Privatize Posts/Pages or Not?

I have a debate brewing in my mind about this Blog/journal — to privatize posts/pages of a certain nature or not. None of the over 100 posts were ever posted with any intent other than to share my personal memories of my life, hometown and various topics that are current that hold my interests.
This will continue to be my philosophy — and should anyone have “issue” with what I have posted here — I, yes, I am the one you should contact with your comments, complaints or friendly suggestions for change. Not my mother, brother, cousins; or other relatives that have contact with me.
If, you return to my site, only to find a post you read previous has changed from “public” to “password protected” — this can mean several things.
1) The content has been outdated by more current information,
2) I need to update/correct or otherwise change the textual content,
3) There are hyperlinks that are included in the post/page that are no longer valid/active, and I will need to see if i can find current links with the same content, before the post/page can restored to a ‘public’ status,
4) I have ‘family issues’ related to aspects of these post/pages — which need to resolved before the status MAY BE changed to public.
One last item:
I am a writer, trained in journalistic style — at one time I was a Communications major (while in college); I also have some training in legal research; what does this mean? (You ask?).
I am somewhat familiar with what is acceptable to be reported/reviewed/re-posted online, and many websites which host many government/freely available documents — free due to the “FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT”.
So, no — I do not place anything on my blog/journal without some form of documentation, and give credit where the items/text/photos originated from — that would not credible research/reporting.
If you want to find out more about the history of your hometown, GOOGLE is your friend — what it can NOT DO is distinguish between what you “want” to find, and what has actually been documented through media, court cases, expose’ books; and genealogy research.
So this brings me back to the debate — to privatize or NOT?
If you have observations/comments — I would like to hear them.

Cooper-Davis family connection, NC

Aunt Betty Jean Davis (Abernathy)’s PATERNAL ancestors; there are more details to be added, as information is compiled into the family tree program.

For now, here are the basic facts:

[internet source: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/a/n/Donald-N-Pantheryates/BOOK-0001/0007-0009.html]

“17. WILLIAM5 COOPER (WILLIAM A.4, JAMES3, ROBERT2, ROBERT1) was born 1753 in N.C. (?), and died Aft. 1820 in Pensacola, Fla. (?). He married (1) CHOCTAW WIFE Abt. 1800. He married (2) POLLY BANKS WARNER November 1801, daughter of WETTENHALL WARNER and ELIZABETH CARGILL. She was born August 25, 1783 in Orangeburg Dist., S.C., and died Bef. 1820.

Notes for WILLIAM COOPER:
Arrived with other Coopers before 1787 as one of numerous North Carolinians in Natchez District, under Spanish rule, and became a cabo (corporal) in the Second and Sandy Creek District along Tennessee and headwaters of Tombigbe River (tristate area of TN/MS/AL). Returned in 1806 and got grant on Big Black River. Ended up as widower in Pensacola.
Early Settlers of Mississippi as Taken from Land Claims in the Mississippi Territory[....]“

William Copper and Mary “Polly” Banks Warner, according to data I have collected, are Betty Jean Davis (Abernathy)’s fourth great-grandparents.

Thank you, Dr. Donald Panther-Yates! for posting your genealogy databases online.

Taking a short break to post again — a different vain.
Yes, there will be further news about research. But not tonight.
Watching a DVD on the computer (external monitor) while I do other with the laptop monitor.
Not done this too much seems rather odd.
Hope your day has been a god one.

Snow Days and Family Trees?

It has been a snow/ice day in Alabama today.
How does that related to family trees?
Well, since I am indoors from the weather, and have the flu-bug to boot, it means when I have had the brief burst(s) of energy — I have added a bit more to several ancestral branches.
No huge breakthroughs, but have made several connection I did not expect.
Last couple I stopped at was William N. Collins and Permelia Mary “Melia” Smith — don’t ask how I ended up with this couple.
They were somehow connect to the various families that I was tracing, from the Yancey County (Bald Mountain region) of North Carolina.
No family tree is SIMPLE…anyone who tells you that, has not done much research.
Somehow, the folks I have added to my main family tree file most likely are related to my Aunt Betty Jean Davis (Abernathy).
Her ancestral line is where I began today’s research project…
Okay, I am not getting much more done on this blog or the research…guess I need to get something to drink and get back to doing ‘something’ while the dryer is get the clothes done.
Another update will be in the works as soon as I find something news-worthy.

Family Tree Progess

Okay, let’s do a quick wrap-up here…

The PARK family has descendency ties to Robert E. Lee; his ancestor who was George Washington’s wife (maiden name CUSTIS); PARK/PARKE/PARKS descendants are connected to the Burchfields — the Burchfields via the Park line (somewhere) are kin to the Gustafsson/Justice family originally from Sweden; and how did I get here (this time)?

Tracing the Davis-Smathers connection of Aunt Betty Davis (married – Jack Abernathy) — trying to learn about her father’s family.

The other point of interest is the ties to a Cherokee Chief Oowahooskie (various spellings found). His ‘wife’ had been captured from a white settlement/group when she was about six years old. They had three sons; she and the sons were later released — they lived as white men, and were land-holders. This made for Cherokee heritage claims with US courts unsuccessful — but the Indian connection seems valid from research/sources found online, now.

There is also a connection between the PARK family and a CHANDLER line in Georgia…will follow this up later.

Another connection exist between the DAVIS line and the CARPENTER (ZIMMERMAN) families from North Carolina — this warrants further research, since my mother and my father’s ancestral line include connection to the CARPENTER (ZIMMERMAN) lines from the Carolinas.

NO direct Patey/PATE/PATTY connections — but have found AYERS/AYRES, PAYNE, and McClellan connections in the Carolina regions (where my husbands family were from)…The PAYNE connection may link up with the TEAGUE, SPEER, PERRY, OWEN or other related families who later migrated to NE Alabama (near Ft. Payne).

With the research from the past three days — “We are all kin” has more meaning then is previously did, for me.

Each friend I have helped with their family tree research, I have also found something that fit with prior research for my own complicated ancestral lines.

Are your ancestors included in this tangle of kinfolks?

Contact me with a bit of your grandparents vital statics (dates, location, family members) — I will see what I can find.

Hot Day

7 July 2010
One very hot day.
Dave and I delivered groceries to Mom; then headed back home.
Stopped at a few thrift/antique stores along the way.
Since getting in the AC, and starting to cool off, have been reading messages, and adding/correcting more items on my websites (someone set in havoc by my previous computer dying); as well as blogs, and misc. stuff.
Need to get things sorted out with this new laptop, get it behaving the way I want it; so I will be able to create a backup set of RECOVERY disks — then get Dave to set it for dual-boot (Windows 7 and Linux).
My head is pounding, so I won’t do much more for now.
How has your week been?
Would love to hear from my readers.
